You’ve probably heard people reference 4:20 or 4/20 and giggle. 420 is known as the national holiday for cannabis culture, but few actually know how the date got chosen.
Some say 420 is the code law enforcement uses to cite marijuane use. Others say 4/20 was Adolf Hitlers birthday. But to put it bluntly those theories are all false.
420 actually originated from a group of high school kids. The friends would gather together at 4:20 pm at a statue on their school grounds. They would of course meet up and toke up. They chose that specific time because extracurricular activities had usually ended by then. These kids were tired of the typical Friday night shenanigans so they created a new ritual. They would use 420 as their code word.
Nowadays it is quite the commercialized event. You can find all kinds of 420 swag shirts, phone cases, binders, socks, you name it. So there you have it folks, this fun, funny, and well loved holiday has nothing to do with law enforcement codes or Hitler. It all came from a group of rad kids breaking away from the same old same old. For more fun cannabis history follow our blog and follow our social media.
